Had a fun trial this past weekend, December 20th! How nice to spend some time with some of the finest people I have had the pleasure of meeting while involved with the hunters trials. We had a fun little Christmas get-together with everyone who stayed for the placements. On behalf of myself, John Kelley and Larry Jennings, and the entire South Cuyahoga Sportsmens Association, we send our very best wishes for a blessed Christmas holiday season, along with our hopes for a very prosperous and healthy New Year to all of the participating clubs, and their members. We look forward to seeing everyone very soon!

I may have a very nice orange/white English Setter male (16-weeks) available to the right home. He is from outstanding FDSB bloodlines and I was planning on competing with him in American Field walking trials; however, he has Cryptorchidism (only one testicle has descended), so he must be neutered. I got him at 11-weeks and he has been kept in the house (he's almost house-broke). He's been exposed to birds (pigeons and quail) and has strong hunting instincts and prey drive. I have also started basic yard-training...he is a smart little guy. If he's true to his bloodline, he should go about 48-52#. He would make a great hunting or hunter's trial dog. I'd like him to be with a family that has kids and will keep him in the house. I'm asking $200.00 just to cover his vet bills (up to date on all shots, heartworm, etc.) and require that he be neutered as a condition of sale. E-mail if interested and I can send you some pics...dptak@prodigy.net Thanks, Dale

Disappointing News.......Trial scheduled for Huron Township on November 15 has been CANCELLED. The new board has decided that this trial is in conflict with pheasant season (even though we've had a November trial for yeeeaaaarrrs!). What can you do? January trial is still on as scheduled. We are a small club. Can't say thanks enough to the handful of people that support our club every year!!! See you at the trials!

Michael â?? Being a DOG DIVA isnâ??t easy. You canâ??t imagine the immense pressure on me every week. Not only do I have to perform well in the field, but I have to be cute doing it. Those big black, yellow, chocolate (my favorite by the way) dogs can just go out and lumber through the field with total disregard for their personal appearance. Oh for that luxury. By the way, I think that there should be a new scoring block on the score card for cute points. Well off to the beauty parlor. Hope to see you all in September. Ta Ta..

one of the ideas floated around was making all English Cocker spaniels run last, like heat dogs. We chairmen felt that all other dogs were at a disadvantage when the judges were being bombarded with "Oh, but it's soooooo cuuuute!!! comments from the spectators while judging them in the field. Lucky for you Terry, it failed, but not by much!!!!

The chairmens meeting was held at SCSA All clubs were represented. There will be a few changes in the schedule (very few). Dog of the year will have 2 divisions Open and all others, with a trophy for pointing and flushing for both categories, using 3-2-1 point system from each trial. Also Senior dogs can run in 2 classes at the winners trial (senior + open or AA New schedule, and pictures will be posted soon

Well, it looks like we survived another ABIWT! I have recieved several congratulatory phone calls since Sat., and I share the compliments with both John Kelley and Larry Jennings. We could not have done it without their strong presence and influence on the trial. Looking back, I wish I would have remembered a couple of things I wanted to note and mention at our banquet. First, and foremost, to Rick Hill for all of the courage under fire. Rick was rock solid, and until you have to depend on an individual to help guide you through an event like this, his assistance was INVALUABLE!! Next, proving that the apple really doesn't fall far from the tree, Ms. Janessa Hill, and her group from Hocking College for their help all day long. An incredible addition to the Winners trial. We are grateful they decided to join us to earn their service hours. What wonderful help with selling the raffles, and all the necessary help in making this event work. I have already told John Rizzo to pray that they are willing to volunteer next year! Of course, to Mr. Terry Reckart for the lovely gift of wine for the ladies at the hospitality room Sat. afternoon. D'arcy Egan just did a story about our trial series becoming multi-generational, and this was certainly proved when 3 generations of the Reckarts joined us for a day afield. Terry, that is certainly something to be proud of! Please let Kyle and dad know how honored we were to have you all in attendance. Please plan on helping out next year, so we have an equally enjoyable time. My fondest regards to everyone who pitched in to make this work for alof us. You are the best! Mike

Ken Buehner Sr. said:   April 2, 2009 7:26 am PST
Glad to hear birds can be donated to benefit those in need. Let's all step up and make last years 250# donation a drop in the bucket.

sherri said:   April 2, 2009 6:07 am PST
No worries Mike. We were supposed to run on guinneas and chickens last year and they fell through. Then all roosters for most classes. Didn't have enough so ended up running some of the classes on a hen/rooster mix. If someone complains, they can do it next year. You're doing the best that you can! And you're doing great! By the way, hens eat just as nicely as roosters! Don't forget to drop your birds off at the cleaning station so that the meat can be donated to St. Augustines!! We donated more than 250#'s last year to the Victory Kitchen. I'd like to see this become a tradition....not everyone has it as good as we do! See you all on Saturday and best of Luck!!

Michael A. Kristof said:   April 1, 2009 5:44 pm PST
Another heads up for all handlers! It was ur intention all along to run the open and all age classes on 1 hen and 1 cock. After talking to Windy Ridge tonight, it has been decided that all runs will be on hens. Without the guarantee that cocks would be available for all runs equally, we have decided, in the interest of fairness, to run all dogs on hens. We hope you understand that this was a decision to place all competitors on an even palying field.

Due to a technical difficulty(a fancy way of saying I screwed up!), 2 dates were given for deadline for registration for the ABIWT. I will, in fact, accept registrations for the Winners trial until this coming Friday, March 27th. The random draw will take place that weekend, and notices will be sent out on Monday. Everyone should have by Wed. Additionally, I have been making out the tickets for all of the generous sorts who have sponsored trophies. We plan on conducting the drawing Wed. night at the Quaker Steak and Lube in Valley View at around 6:30 p.m. We invite everyone to join us if you'd like. We will just have our waitress reach in and pull out the name of our lucky winner. Watch for a posting that evening. 2 weeks from today, everyone! Pray for a glorious day weather-wise. Looking forward to seeing everyone then! Please feel free to call me if you have any questions, Mike.

Just an informal poll. If I could arrange for a mobile groomer to do a wash and blow dry on your dog for a nominal fee, is that something you as a handler might take advantage of? He would set up in the Motel 6 parking lot, or service bay. A hot water shampoo and blow dry before taking your dog up to your room. Any thoughts, please.

Warmest wishes to all for a wonderful Thanksgiving! Had my son, John, to SCSA for our thanksgiving bird release this morning. Saw a bunch of friends there. We're releasing another 170 roosters tomorrow morning. Johnny is enjoying hunting over Viper! He's really learning to read him as he makes game. As I have stated to many others, memories of my late father come flooding back to me as I spend more time in the field with my own son. I hope everyone will take a youth out with them when given the opportunity! We are having a blast! I know that a pup is in his future.

I have been reading with interest some of the comments showing up on this forum lately, and thought I might share some information about this series of trials. One might get the impression that there are some serious issues that could affect the future of this organization. The truth is this series is being run by a group of chairmen, and volunteers that go to great effort to make each trial a success. They give there time freely, and subsidies trial expenses out of there own pocket. They don't do this for monetary reward, or even gratitude from participants. They do it because they believe this truly is a tradition worth honoring, and preserving, and they will do what ever it takes to keep this series going. Since starting this web page I have received emails from all over the country from folks who are impressed with this trial format, and cooperation between the various clubs. There is no other dog trial series even remotely like this any where in the country. We are the envy of a tremendous amount of bird dog owners, and we should all be thankful for the opportunity to participate in this series. I have talked about the dedication, and hard work of the club chairman, and volunteers, but that's not what this series is about. They can put on a perfect trial, but if no participants show up, there is no Hunters Trial Series. Thats what this group of trials is really about, a group of dedicated dog owners paying entry fees when gas is high, and work is slow. Showing up week after week to have fellowship with people who love what they love. The dogs, the bird work, and the camaraderie. As with any organization that has the diversity that we share, there will be some conflicts, and nitpicking. I am sure it has been going on since its beginnings in the 60s, and I am confident it won't change much in the next 40 years. Catch ya later Rick Hill

Well said Mike. All of the whining gets to be disheartening to say the least. You work your behind off only to be torn to shreds by a select few. My opinion has always been: if you can do it better, do it; if your way is better, show up and show me ~ don't sit in the gallery playing Monday morning football. There are lots of great people in this circuit ~ I'd like to see their positive attitudes and respectfulness come to the forefront and leave the whiners at the wine & cheese party. When's the last time you as a handler thanked the people at a trial for their help? Or told the chairman "good job today" or offered to help at the next trial?? When's the last time you brought a new person out to play the game? Encouraged a fellow handler or did something to better the sport and this circuit? **Have you offered to help Mike with the Winners' Trial?? If not, you have no room to complain.

This is a rant, and some people may not like it. As a casual observer at area trials, I get the biggest kick out of listening to the comments of some of the handlers who participate in these events! You know who you are, too!! "Why did they do that, why did they do this? Club chairmen, and their committees, work there asses off for YOUR enjoyment, but somehow thats not good enough. And when good people get sick of the crap, they bail out of these events. What does this leave? The same people who bitch, do nothing to enhance these events, contribute nothing to the sport, then wonder why this or that person quit, and why all of a sudden is this activity suffering?. I was embarassed listening to the retarted comments of a couple of individuals at Cuyahoga Coon this past weekend. I tell everyone,"Step up to the plate!!" and take your turn. Know -it-alls who contribute nothing, but are convinced they will re-invent the wheel. Hey,guess what. We already got the wheel!

There was a guy running boykins who was selling custom made Spaniel whistles. If anybody has his name and contact info it would be apreciated. Ed

I checked this website for the schedule Friday and planned to meet a new guy to introduce him to hunters trials at South Cuyahoga today. This gentleman drove over an hour so he could watch and learn the rules and format ectâ?¦ This guy wasted his time and gas on a Sunday morning.. What could I do but apologize and show him the schedule. I would like to suggest that this bulletin board be used to communicate and schedule changes and important information in the future. Another way to communicate better would be to send out mass emails like other trial formats use to communicate. Thank you, Ed Huemmrich

Just a heads up to all handlers. I have been entering results, and addresses, to insure everyone gets their invitation to this years Winners trial. However, it is your responsibility to provide your address when filling out your entry sheets. I have no intention of hunting down anyones address to get them Winners trial information. A last name, along with a dogs name, and no provided mailing address on a mailing label will be flagged at the Post Office as"undeliverable". Besides, I wouldn't waste the 43 cents on such an envelope!! If you want to insure yourself getting Winners trial info, fill in all necessary information on your entry sheets!!!Thanks in advance for your consideration.

Hope we have some poker players out there!! The SCSA is sponsoring the First Annual All-Breed Invitational Winners trial Poker Run. You'll have to buy a card at each of the participating clubs, so make plans to visit all of the clubs this season! 52 cards in sealed envelopes will be sold at each club this season. Pinecrest, Huron Twp. CC and The FFF will split a deck between them due to their limited schedules. You'll need an A,B,C,D and E envelope on the night of the Winners Trial banquet. All cards will be re-issued to the 52 players participating in the poker run. Winner to recieve a $1,500.00 Visa gift card!! WOW!! Use it for gas, towards a gun, a family vacation, etc!! Don't get shut out!! There will only be 52 players in it. 100% of the net proceeds from this raffle will be placed right back into the winners trial and banquet. There are tons of expenses associated with putting on an event like this, and we hope this will help generate ome revenue whileadding some dramatic flare to the evening. You don't have to place a dog to participate in this fundraiser. Any questions can be sent to me at maktheqwk@wowway.com The first event of the season is right around the corner!!

Ever think about adding another class between either Derby and Open, or Open and All Age? It would spread out the currently overfilled open class. (i.e. 30 months to 60 months class?)

Ed Huemmrich said:   July 13, 2008 1:09 pm PST
I have to agree with what dwight and terry said. With large open class there is definetly advantage in open class

Bob Lowman said:   July 11, 2008 5:57 am PST
I would like to respond to the questions about the point system. If you take a look at the amount of Open dogs that compete in every event compared to the amount of All Age, Puppy, or Derby dogs that compet the All Age, Puppy, or Derby dogs are going to have a better chance at multi 1st. place placements which will give them a advantage. Most Open dogs only place 1st. once or twice in a given year do to the amount of competition. this alone will level the playing field for all dogs.

Dwight Gregory said:   July 8, 2008 12:00 am PST
Terry good call this would bump out the all age dogs. Do to it being a smaller class, even though IMO The all age dogs are of a higher standard.

Terry said:   July 2, 2008 12:04 pm PST
Hello to all. Dad & I are looking forward to seeing everyone again this fall. I noted what I think may be a problem with the "Team" points awarding system as published on the web page. Multiplying the placement points by the dogs in the class will give a real advantage to the OPEN class dogs. What do all of you think? See you all soon.

More than 250#'s of pheasant was donated to the Visctory Kitchen to feed the homeless and less fortunate. (We lost track after 250#'s) To say they are grateful is not enough! Thank you to Tom Faetnini and his son and Jim Boehlke from the Sandusky Bay Chapter of DU and a couple of WR's kids ~ they cleaned more than 300 birds!! Am hoping this idea will continue with the other clubs. Its a shame to see so much meat go to waste when it can do so much good ! ! Not to mention that it makes groups such as ourselves look better in the public eye!! THANK YOU!

Just a quick note, as the ONLY Canadian who participated in this years event, I would like to express a huge thank you to everyone who helped me out. From lending me a gun, shells. (border issues) and just being friendly in general. Sherry called me crazy for driving 3 hrs to run my dog for 10 min. but as you all know it's about spending time with your dog or dogs and meeting new ppl. I hope to qualify again for next years event. With that being said, I hope to drag a couple other Canadians down with me and with any luck my dog will place next year. Sherry, I know I have already told you, but great job. Thanks again. Wayne R. (AKA November)

THANK YOU!!!! to all of you who participated in this year's Winners' Trial and attended the banquet! Because of you it was a success! To anyone and everyone that helped out whether it be running copies for me over the last several months or gallery gunning the day of, I appreciate everyone's effort! I couldn't have asked for a better group of people to work with. To the judges - you guys did a great job ~ you worked well together & did what needed to be done! I hope the 2-judge idea for the winners' trial sticks! To WR, your birdsetters were awesome! My only regret~the birds got too wet. What can you do ~ everyone got the same thing. (& I didn't take enough pictures) In case you didn't know, all of this year's birds were donated by Castalia Farms!! Hope all of you had a great time ~ see you next season!!

Thanks to the trial chairmen - at least the majority - who are sending the trial results via fax or email to be published in The Plain Dealer each Friday. If your club's results are not posted in The PD, let your trial chairman know about it. I prefer email results. The penmanship of some trial chairmen sending results by fax leaves me scratching my head. Congrats to all of the handlers and dogs earning placements!
